I am very excited to have the opportunity to help others by creating memorial marbles. What I do is an art marble with cremation ash incorporated into the marble. I have developed a process that works well to do this. I provide a hand made vial to collect the ashes, the vial will be in the studio with me during all stages of making the art glass piece in their remembrance.
The choice to have a memorial glass art piece created is a very personal decision. Each individual feels different about what it means to them and how it makes them feel. I am honored to create something that can help people enjoy their remembrance of the deceased. I also take the time and effort to honor the individual in multiple ways. For example, I play their favorite music during the making of each component of the art piece.
One of the awesome things about doing glass art pieces is how the final color is not defined until it goes through the final kiln firing schedule. Many colors will change during the final heating and annealing process. I let the person who is commissioning select the color palette I will use, most pieces will contain many colors and the primary color is often mixed to ensure it will be unique.
When I am finished I feel like I was the one honored by having the opportunity to hang out with them.
I am often asked how I got started. This is the very abreviated version, when you see me I invite you to ask as I never tire of telling the story. :)
The way I got started was not unlike the classic one door closes another door opens. During a period of time I fought shoulder pain, therefore looking for a new hobby that would not irritate my shoulders. My wife bought me a Groupon for Portland Glass Blowers. I grabbed my son and we went to redeam the Groupon, I was hooked that day. We made a wine gobblet and a paper weight. I have been collecting tools and grabbing every opportunity to increase my skills ever since. I have found the glass artist community to be very loving, compassionate, caring, and positive individuals. I feel very fortunate to have discovered such a great community.
